“Hear my name”

Give this video at least 30 seconds, I promise it gets interesting.  You just have to love the Europeans, they just are not quite as uptight when it comes to things with a sexual theme.  If you are curious why I am posting a music video on my blog, you will understand as the line to be spanked grows longer and longer.

Like some of you may have, I certainly wondered what the heck that song was, and who the women were, so I took a guess that the song's name was "Hear My Name" (which it is), but everything I found out after that is mystifying, and just goes to show how little I understand about what is, to me, the bizarre current state of popular music.

The "artist" for that video is Armand Van Helden, who is a guy, and is described as a record producer and remixer (whatever the heck a remixer is). This single is listed as being on two of his albums, "New York: A Mix Odyssey" and "Nympho." Oh, and it's not clear that he IS European; he's moved a lot, but it looks like he was born and mostly works in Boston.

None of that explains who the girls are (either the ones on camera or the ones singing, who may or may not be the same), or why the group is named after a guy instead of them. I realize this happened even in "the good old days" -- there were a few groups that were named after someone who was more an assembler of talent than a musician, and the main musicians -- vocalists or lead instrumentalists -- were his employees, and remained relatively anonymous. The Alan Parsons Project is the one that comes to mind but I'm sure there were others. (I'm not counting groups that were named after a historical personage totally unrelated to the band, like Jethro Tull; that's obviously another category.)

But that doesn't mean I have to like it. Those two pretty girls (assuming for a moment that the same girls DID appear in the video and do the singing) do all the work, and some scruffy "remixer" gets the name credit. Doesn't seem fair.
